When the Golden Globe solo-circumnavigation race was announced, a race where contestants had to travel around the world, but were not allowed to go on land, Moitessier joined. He was in the lead when he decided to drop out and continue sailing around the world. Eventually, he stopped in Tahiti, where he kept living on his boat.
