William Hope Hodgson was a sailor, personal trainer, business owner, and author of paranormal sea tales. At thirteen, he chose to run away to the sea. Though he was caught, he soon got permission to be apprenticed a a cabin boy. Being out at sea exposed Hodgson to “terror, not only terror but the potential of terror… the thinness of the invisible boundary between the world of normality and an underlying unaccountable reality for which humans are not suited.”(Wiki William Hope Hodgson)
